In exception to three-dimensional art, all forms of visual media are on a two dimensional plane. On the two dimensional plane, we have mastered its ability of mimicry and sold the necessity of an illusion resembling reality; It is a common issue of being unable to differentiate the two-dimensional and real life. This difficulty of differentiation has only been exacerbated due to the increase of screens and the accessibility of illusionary media to be given the same weight and mental cognition as a three dimensional space.
All artists, especially artists trained on an academic level, understand that a two dimensional plane cannot accurately depict a three dimensional figure. Distorted camera lenses all show a singular 3D figure in different ways, yet none of them show an objective truth. We trust the camera and we trust the photographer to show a “truth” that is in fact another illusion but one we allow. This illusion is so good at mimicking a three dimensional reality because it depicts an albeit limited perspective of it. Ignoring all philosophical, moral, and aesthetic considerations, this two dimensional plane is not a complete reality.
When someone online makes 3D art (like digital models) I struggle understanding a differentiation from 2D art simply because it’s still on 2D plane. We assume a digital 3D model program is an objective view of a 3d novel, when any three dimensional space is prone to illusionary and limiting depictions.
That being said I believe the same could be done about the three dimensional world creating illusions by accurately mimicking a four dimensional space. If done so accurately, a fictional fourth dimensional person could be tricked by a 3D depiction of a 4D space.
Even if there was an inherent limitation, the ability of mimicry and the illusion of objective depiction could give a 3D object the same weight as a 4D reality. Modern art movements depicting or attempting to depict a 4D space on a 2d plane are double-diluting its accuracy, and any 4D art depictions, if desired to be done as accurately as possible, should be made on a 3D plane. That's as if we made sculptures trying to depict a 5D plane, or if there was one dimensional art attempting to depict a 3D plane.
TLDR: A 4D being would play a video game through a 3D system that mimics a 4D plane in the same way we play video games that mimic a 3D plane through a 2D system.
Questions I still have:
- Is it even possible to understand the perspective of a 1D or 5D plane?
- Is the light projected on a phone screen a two-dimensional space?
- Is everything we interact within this universe a 3D plane? I know light can technically exist and transcend dimensions, but is light projected on a thin 3D screen 2D? Or really thin 3D?
